Port Arthur and Tasman Peninsula

18.January 2011 - Hobart

Again not really comfi, but it had be the last time on the trip, so anyway.
After breakfast we went to Port Arthur. The "day" started with an introduction guide tour around the area. We received information about the building, the victims and how things where around the time Port Arthur was a prison for victims from England. Our guide had a little monotone voice but the information was interesting.
We then went to the included harbour cruise. We got on the ferry and nearly half an hour got explained the "sea-area" around port Arthur. Mainly the isle of the death, a little island were 1100 people were buried. The second island was _______________. On this island they transported kinds (in this century a kid at the age of 7 could be made responsible for committing a crime and at the age of 8 he or she could also get executed because of committing a crime!). The idea of bringing the little ?criminals? on the island was to separate them from the elders (not bad ideals) and bring them back on the ?right way?.
When we got back to the mainland we discovered the journey of ?our? victim (on the entrance you got a playing card - my was a heart ass - and then you had to follow a path to get to know your victim).
Later we visited the remaining historical buildings - a church, house of the priest, the accountance, some officer and also the prisoner. It was very interesting to read about how they were used and what happened when the prison was closed. On became a Hotel, others private house or a hostel. So the hours flew past and in the late afternoon we got back to the car.
We then drove in direction to Hobart and visited the devils kitchen, the arche, a blowhole and beautiful cliffs on our way back. Just stunning!
Back in Hobart we drove up the 1270 m in height Mt. Wellington. We were lucky with the weather and enjoyed a beautiful view around the city and the surrounding cities and landscape.
